Trimmer Optimizer upgrade offers “new life” to Boise Cascade’s LaGrande sawmill

Newnes-McGehee recently received an order for a “new life” trimmer optimizer upgrade at Boise Cascade, LaGrande, OR. This upgrade includes both replacement sensors and new optimization software that will increase recovery for the mill. “New life” refers to a new capital purchase utilizing pre-owned, refurbished sensors.

The LPS series of sensors have been used in Newnes transverse scanners since the first release in 1988. The latest release, LPS3, was launched in 1999. To date the company has produced 10,000 LPS sensors.

Since the launch of the LPS3 sensor, over 1000 LPS2 sensors have come back to Newnes-McGehee warehouses for refurbishment. While not the latest release, LPS2 is still a very solid sensor. Coupled with Newnes-McGehee’s latest software (V6.3), LPS2 offers a very attractive return on investment.

Newnes-McGehee introduced the “new life” offering to help customers operating transverse optimizers that have become unsupported over time. The “new life” scanner will utilize reconditioned LPS2 sensors and be installed with new optimization hardware and software. This enables a mill to upgrade to a system with the latest software and can be supported going forward.

At Boise Cascade, Newnes-McGehee is also upgrading the controls system to the Allen Bradley ControlLogix 5000 platform. The new controls system is designed to control Newnes-McGehee-supplied equipment as well as the mill’s existing equipment from the unscrambler to the trimmer.
