Wisconsin's Futurewood gets SFI biomass certification |
|
After a
third-party audit by QMI-SAI Global, Futurewood Corp. along with
Johnson Timber Corp., Flambeau River Papers, and Flambeau River
BioFuels is SFI chain of custody certified for its sourcing of biomass
fiber. This chain-of-custody certification is the first given to an SFI
program participant for the use of biomass in North America.
Futurewood
Corp supplies approximately 170,000 tons of biomass to Johnson Timber
Corp, Flambeau River Papers, and Flambeau River BioFuels for use in
pellet making and steam and electricity generation.
"Futurewood's
biomass program, along with new pellet technology from Johnson Timber
and our energy efficiency programs have allowed Flambeau River Papers
to become independent of coal," said Randy Stoeckel, General Manager of
Flambeau River Papers. "SFI chain-of-custody certification adds even
more benefits by supporting responsible forest management, which will
benefit future generations."
Through SFI chain-of-custody
certification, companies must have a tracking system in place so they
can tell customers the amount of certified, uncertified and recycled
content in the forest products they buy, use or sell.
"SFI
chain-of-custody requirements are the same regardless of whether the
end product is lumber, paper or biomass for energy," said SFI President
and CEO Kathy Abusow. "By achieving SFI chain-of-custody certification,
Futurewood has joined a growing number of organizations who are
demonstrating their commitment to responsible forest practices."
"As
a third-party certifier, QMI-SAI Global is pleased to be associated
with Futurewood Corp. and the other divisions in achieving this
milestone," said Guillaume Gignac, Manager Forestry Program. "By
adopting the SFI standard for chain of custody, Futurewood is
demonstrating its commitment to using and providing products from
well-managed forests."
